Brothers of the Knight

Authors: Debbie Allen and Kadir Nelson
Average review score:

For every child
It's a wonderful story full of surprises. Exceptional pictures!

Wonderful!
Reverend Knight, a straight-laced and dignified preacher and father of twelve wonderful sons, has a problem. Each morning his sons' shoes are utterly worn out, and no one can figure out how it happens. One day a miracle comes to the Reverend's home in the shape of a new nanny, sweet Sunday. Using a magic scarf, Sunday follows the young men across the rooftops of Harlem to the Big Band Ballroom, where they proceed to dance the night away--and their shoes to pieces. Now that she knows their secret, it is time to teach the young Knights a lesson, and maybe even their father as well.

My son selected this book, and I couldn't be happier. The story is a wonderful updating of the classic tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses, which is both magical and yet very real. The illustrations, by Kadir Nelson, are wonderful, adding some real power and animation to the story. I love this book, and recommend it to you with all my heart.

Reflection
I truly enjoyed this reading experience. It is cute and catchy and the illustrations are wonderful. On a deeper level I feel that this story speaks to parent-child communication. As adults, often times we may forget that our children are reflections of us. They come from us. They are the essence of our beings. Sometimes the very thing we try to suppress is the exact thing that our children are drawn to most. Why? Because they come from us. Part of us lives in them. Open, honest communication is the best way to plant seeds in our children's lives. Like a mirror looking back at you, our children will be what they see in us.

Peace

The BIBLE of Meditation Tapes for me!!
After reading Shakti's "Living In The Light", and being totally reborn by it, I eagerly ordered this tape with the hope that it would help me learn to meditate successfully. I had tried other tapes, as well as tried on my own, with awful results.

WHAT A WONDERFUL, UNEXPECTED BLESSING!! I got powerful results right away. After struggling with smoking for 28 years, and trying every method under the sun, I stopped cold turkey after listening to Side B of this tape morning and night, and visualizing after just 3 weeks. That was 5 years ago!!

Shakti's voice is warm and reassuring, and I've used this tape to manifest many other things in my life. I give it to others as a gift all the time, and I highly recommend it if you'd like a strong model on which to pattern your own meditations.

It works!
This is my first guided meditation with a tape, and it (surprisingly) really worked for me! Usually, I have trouble thinking too much to sit still, so this really helped with that. I got this on audible to listen to my mp3 player, but I'm going to get this for friends and family.

Great guided meditations and visualizations!
I'm fairly new at meditation and needed some guidance. Shakti Gawain's Creative Visualization Meditations cassette tape has been a very good way for me to get on track. She offers several types of meditations, from relaxation to visualization - I've enjoyed them all so far. Highly recommended!

Fast Fiction: Creating Fiction in Five Minutes
Published in Hardcover by Story Pr (June, 1997)
Author: Roberta Allen

GOOD AT GETTING ANYONE IN THE MOOD TO WRITE
I read this book and totally loved it. There are so many writing exercises and it's so fun doing them. For example, one topic might be to write about a secret and you have only five minutes to write about it.
When I did the exercises I was so surprised by some of the stuff I wrote. The ideas just came in a flash for me. I found myself with so many ideas rushing through me that I had to slow down a little to actually get everything written down. Occasionally, I would read one of the topics and for a second I'd think something like, "Okay, I can't think of anything to write about an insect" and then the next second I found myself just writing for five minutes straight as the story rapidly unfolded in my mind. When the five minutes were up, I'd be left feeling stunned that I actually wrote a pretty decent story on a subject like the one above.
Although, I've always enjoyed writing, before I read this book I was starting to get a little stuck. I had trouble thinking of topics or finishing short stories. This book really made me want to start writing stories again. I haven't completely finished the book yet, but already it has really helped me out a lot. I unquestionably reccomend this book to anyone reading this review.

Great book for any writer
I LOVED THIS BOOK. It was great. I've always enjoyed writing, but a few months ago I got writer's block. This book helped me to get started in short stories again. I highly recommend this book to anyone reading this review.

encouraging, helpful, inspirational!
I have really gotten a lot out of this book. Ms. Allen breaks down the art of storytelling into 5 minute exercises that are easily done, and that can be linked together to complete longer stories - even full-length novels! By breaking the assignments down into 5 minute exercises, she takes a rather daunting task and turns it into something easily confronted and easily done. She gives lists of exercises which are varied and interesting, and which are geared to really stimulate one's creativity. There is even a section of photographs that one can use as a starting point in their writing.

I really enjoyed reading the samples of short shorts which she included, both from unpublished and published writers, and I found her appreciation for her students to be very encouraging.

I think she must be a wonderful teacher, and I am actually quite grateful that she has written this book. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys writing, or who thinks they MIGHT enjoy it if given the proper encouragement.

Allen Iverson: Fear No One
Published in Digital by Pocket Books ()
Author: John Smallwood
Average review score:

The Life of Allen Iverson
-Fear no One by John Smallwood Jr. is a biography about Allen Iverson. Allen Iverson is by far the greatest basketball player of all time. The press paints a false picture of Iverson. They portray him as the "bad guy", however deep down Iverson grew up in the worst neighborhoods in Virginia. He went through many struggles as a child, his younger sister was sick and medical bills stacked up, meanwhile the family was heavily indebted. His stepfather got arrested for being a drug dealer and upon being arrested he claimed the reason for leading this way of life was simply to support his family. Iverson, on the other hand, was not mad at his stepfather for choosing his lifestyle because he understood the need to raise his family. Since his stepfather was now incarcerated Allen had to take the role as the "man of the house".
-Iverson was not only an outstanding basketball player, but was also a great football player. In high school, he set records, broke records and even broke his own records. My favorite part of the book was when Iverson finally made it to the Georgetown basketball team. He became a Hoya. While he was a Hoya, one of the things he said that was written in the book that showed how hard Iverson led his life was "And growing up the way I had to grow up. That's pressure. That's life."
-The theme of the book is to keep striving for your goals, to never give up. Even though Iverson went to a juvenile detention center, he never quit. He overcame all his obstacles and is now one of the greatest and best-paid basketball players in the NBA. This book taught me to never give up my goals, and to keep pushing until I reach all my goals. I would strongly recommend this book to all the readers who have a dream.

Iverson is tough
I respect how Hard Allen Iverson the Player plays.I also Respect Allen Iverson the Person for what He has had to overcome.though He plays in a Very Tough Profession nothing Compares to His Upbringing&Surroundings&the many things He has Endured&gone through. The Man is Tough On&Off the Court.

Brandon Clay's Review of Allen Iverson: Fear No One
If you are a Allen Iverson fan theny ou will love this book because of the detail, and background information about Allen Iverson. It tells about how his mother Ann Iverson got pregnant at 15. She didn't want her son to grow up in the same neighborhood that she did, because of the gangs, drugs, and violence. So she moved to a apartment complex that was a little better for her son. once she moved she end up having two more children that were both girls. Allen youngest sister had medical conditions. Such as having ceasars at any time of the day. Allen first sport that he fell in love with was football. He didn't really like basketball so his mother made him like it through tuff love. Once he started playing, he started to enjoy playing b-ball. he then went to high school and won the championship, and the state title in both basketball, and football. He then decided to go on and play ball for coach John Thomas at the University of Georgetown, Since he wanted Allen to play for him. Once there Allen enjoyed himself and wanted to help his family, so he decide to go in to the NBA draft. He was then choosen as the #1 draft pick of the 1996 draft by the Philidelphia Seventy-Sixers. Once there he played to the best of his ability but didn't have any teammates that were reliable to help through the hard games. After they aquired Dikemba Metombo they were on there way. They won the eastern coference championship. They then went on to lose the NBA finals to the Los Angeles Lakers. In that same year Allen won the MVP award. He and the sixers battled through and lost in the first round to the Boston Celtics.

Bad Times ... and Then There was God
Published in Paperback by Pine Orchard (01 March, 2001)
Authors: Ivan Allen and Irene Allen
Average review score:

Great Story! I see God's leading in his life.
The stories about the history, his family and the Indians around his life gave me a new perspective about this time in history. Ivan, an engineer, has told a story in this book about his experiences and involvement in the transformation of our nation from the 'old west' to the modern technological age. I have always been in awe of people who have had challenging life experiences. It was fun to read this book and see how all these experiences have shown God's leading in Ivan's life.

Excellent Oklahoma family history
Ivan Allen is my uncle. (my mothers brother) I was very happy that he wrote this book because it brought back many memories dating back to when I would visit my grandparents farm in Sumner, Oklahoma. When I saw the photographs of my grandparents, (uncle Ivans parents) and his children and family, I got a very nostalgic feeling. Sumner, Oklahoma is a simple, hard working farm community in northern Oklahoma and when I read Uncle Ivans book, it brings back a lot of good memories which I will never forget that I had as a child growing up. The old wooden raft (a very heavy wooden raft it is!), is still located somewhere in Sumner, Oklahoma, probably sitting in the corner of a farm pasture near the Allen homestead. I would like to find that old raft and let Uncle Ivan know where it is located and possibly even buy it and give it back to him.. Ivan Allen is a fine christian man with high morals and dignity and I respect him very much. I only wish that I lived closer to him so that he and I could talk about the old homestead and listen to some more of his early childhood experiences at Sumner, Oklahoma. I highly suggest reading his book "Bad Times and Then There Was God" because it will enlighten you on the early times of northern Oklahoma history with sad, serious and funny stories of the past. Its great!

An excellent read. I could not put it down.
Ivan Allen is a personal friend of mine. He and I have known each other for about one year. After reading his book, I feel honored to know him more and make the most of every opportunity to talk to him. The stories and adventures that Ivan relates in his book are very compelling and exciting. My children regard his experiences as many do Laura Ingalls Wilder in her famous biographical stories.

Cisco Router Configuration
Published in Paperback by Cisco Press (March, 1998)
Authors: Allan Leinwand, Bruce Pinsky, Mark Culpepper, Cisco Press, and Allen Leinward
Average review score:

Good enough to use as a reference.
The author did a great job of presenting the relatively basic information on configuring Cisco routers. You will find quite a few useful IOS commands discussed in the book that will want to keep it as a handy reference. I would also suggest looking into getting "Cisco IOS for IP Routing" by Andrew Colton. That book would take you deeper into mechanics of modern routing protocols (EIGRP, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP), along with a discussion of Cisco IOS commands.

Great Starter book.
I read this book and was able to configure two 1720 routers to communicate over a WAN without any problems. I would suggest getting one of the CCNA books for a reference guide. This book does not go into great details about the commands.

Excellent book to follow the CCNA prep library.
There is the CCNA certification which takes you down the path to learning about routers, LANs and WANs, but what if you don't want that you only need to know how to configure the router. The Cisco Pres has put together the book that tackles that very subject.

In 350 plus pages you'll begin with a good breakdown of the OSI model followed up with the basics of how to configure the router. The information has screen shots to show you what things should look like.

After that you move in the always challenging world of TCP/IP with routing protocols and access lists. This section has a great deal of information but you may want to check other sources for more detailed information.

You also go into areas like AppleTalk with LAN and WAN configuration, IPX, SAP and basic management of the router including time control. While most of the book is geared towards the beginner all skill levels should be able to find some useful information within the book.

I found that the information seems to be up to date including topics like Network Time Protocol and Simple Network Time Protocol. Overall a very good value for the money.

The Dark Frigate
Published in Audio Cassette by Listening Library (July, 2001)
Authors: Charles Boardman Hawes and Dominick Allen
Average review score:

Don't get discouraged, it gets pretty good!
"The Dark Frigate" was the 1923 Newbery Award winner. However, as I read the first few chapters I was thinking to myself, "Boy, the Newbery standards weren't very high back then." My chief problem was that it was written in a very archaic and verbose style. I understand that the author was trying to recreate a feeling of 17th century language for his readers, but any child under the age of 12 is going to get frustrated and I doubt many children over age 12 will enjoy wading through its difficult prose either. Also, this is a strange childrens book in that the main character is not a child, but a 19 yr old man with an eye for comely barmaids.

However, if one can get through the rather awkward writing style and the cursory introductions to key characters, "The Dark Frigate" becomes a real page turner when the pirates enter the story and remains one until the last couple of chapters when the author tries to wrap everything up a little too quickly. The chapters dealing with the pirates, though, make for an extremely entertaining and exciting tale. It's those chapters that made me understand why this book won the Newbery.

Although, written for children, "The Dark Frigate" is a rather grown-up book with murders being described in grisly detail, implied torture, hangings, and female characters who aren't exactly chaste maidens. I guess children in the 20's weren't handled with kid gloves when it came to describing the seedier elements of life.

The Dark Frigate
By: Charles Boardmen Hawes

In seventeenth-century England Philip Marshman was suddenly orphaned when his father died at sea. Growing up around ships Philip runs from London and joins the frigate called "The Rose of Devon." In the middle of the voyage to Newfoundland the ship is seized by evil men, from a floating wreck, saved by the Rose of Devon's crew. Now Philip Marshman is a pirate joining these men on there bloody journey. With only his hanging awaiting him in London. Will he survive? Or suffer the same fate as his father.

Can Philip get away from the mutineers?
This book was winner of the 1924 Newbery Medal for best contribution to American children's literature (Unfortunately, Hawes died before the Medal was awarded). It focuses on an English lad named Philip Marsham in the 1640s who signs up for duty on a frigate. The ship is taken over by others and is converted into a pirate ship. Philip has to find a way off the ship and back to England. And, the adventures begin! Boy, I wish I had found this book when I was a kid. Iwould have loved it. Even now, as an adult, I enjoyed it.
